How Beautiful Are the Feet of Those Who Bring the Good News!

Romans

We live during a time in which visible local churches are increasingly abandoning the Word of God as the basis for eternal life, help, and hope, let alone as the foundation for every sermon preached. The very idea of a called man of God being a useful watchman on the walls of God’s eternal city, whose primary purpose is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and its divinely woven pattern between the Old and the New Testaments, is viewed contemptuously, not only by atheists, agnostics, and egalitarians, but also by many teaching in seminaries and Bible colleges, denominational offices, and many bodies of Christ – both great and small. Even here in Atlanta, in the Bible belt, we have an internationally famous and widely listened-to mega-church preacher, who regularly declares that we no longer need the Old Testament Word of God!

For most, if not all of those who hold these views so strongly, this service of installation might seem like an out of date throwback to several centuries in the past. They would question why we make such a serious fuss over the unique calling of a man to serve in Christ’s church and why we are so committed to the faithful preaching of the living Word of Almighty God! They would say to us if they were here, that we do well to honor and encourage Rev. Li, give him some practical pointers and management wisdom – maybe a few more public speaking techniques, and turn him loose! We see in our day a similar falling away from the pure Gospel as Paul was fighting against when he wrote to the church in Galatia:Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

But brothers and sisters, our guide in all things is the living Word of God, unique in its inspiration, truth, wisdom, and transforming power! And so, as we set apart Rev. James Li this evening, to kingdom service here at Hope as an assistant pastor for evangelism and church planting, our first and only guide FOR BOTH THE MESSAGE AND THE MESSENGER is the everlasting Word of God, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and particularly as we find it from God’s servant, the Apostle Paul, in his inspired and pastoral letter to the believers in the church of Rome. It is in Romans 10:8–13, that we find out about the absolute importance of the message that is to be always proclaimed, and that message’s power by the Spirit of God to transform hearts, and minds, and lives!

“But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How could any human message, speech, pep talk, artifice, or eloquence even begin to compare with the Good News of God’s salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord? IT IS THROUGH THE DIVINE MESSAGE OF THE CALL to repent of our sin, to confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, and to believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, that eternal salvation is

Offered to otherwise lost and damned sinners like you and like me! And how incredibly amazing and wonderfully good news it is for otherwise hopeless souls like ours to hear that: “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”! And so it is essential that God’s call to repent and to believe go forth! In The Westminster Confession of Faith, chapter 10, part 1, concerning “Effectual Calling”, we read:

  1. All those whom God hath predestinated unto life, and those only, He is pleased, in His appointed and accepted time, effectually to call, by His Word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ: enlightening their minds, spiritually and savingly, to understand the things of God, taking away their heart of stone, and giving unto them an heart of flesh; renewing their wills, and by His almighty power determining them to that which is good; and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ; yet so as they come most freely, being made willing by His grace.

There is nothing like receiving good news, is there? When General Eisenhower had sent off all of those brave men into combat on June 5th for the next day’s invasion of the Normandy beaches, he did not know what news to expect. He hoped for the best, but in fact he planned for the worst. He even wrote out an apology letter taking all of the blame, that he would release if things went badly during the D-Day landings. And yet, later in the day on June 6, 1944, the news from the landing zones was coming in quite good, and to his great relief Eisenhower never sent his apologetic bad news letter. It was stuffed away and forgotten for decades. Instead. The general of the greatest amphibious landings in all of human history declared the landings a success, and honored the airborne forces whom he had seen off the night before for their bravery and their achievement. The great news of the Allies’ successful landings and the first stage of the campaign to retake the nations of Europe from the mighty fist of Nazi Germany was received with relief and rejoicing, despite the terrible cost, in the United States, Great Britain, and all of the occupied countries.

Now you and I have received far more excellent Good News than even our grandfathers and grandmothers or our fathers and mothers in the summer of 1944! You and I, and people from every generation since Jesus paid the ultimate cost of His body and blood and completed His saving work, have received the offer of the forgiveness of our sins, peace with God, adoption into His family, and everlasting life by believing in Jesus’ name! So why? So why would we preach or teach anything other than this glorious Good News of God’s salvation? Why would we resort to preaching or teaching human wisdom, or creative sayings, or clever, long-winded arguments when we have such life-transforming Good News to share? Why would we replace preaching with pep-talks and self-fulfillment coaching sessions? Why would we replace pulpits with studio chairs and spotlights? Why would we remove the central message given to us from God and replace it with ANYTHING ELSE, WHICH CANNOT SAVE – WHICH CANNOT BRING NEW LIFE – WHICH CANNOT TRANSFORM OUR PRESENT AND OUR FUTURE FOR ALL OF ETERNITY?!?!

Now, as we rely upon God’s inspired instructions about the absolute importance of the MESSAGE of Good News of eternal salvation in Christ, so also we look to what the Holy Spirit tells us through the Apostle Paul about the importance of the MESSENGER who is instructed with the Good News Message. Continuing in Romans 10, verses 14–15:

“How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

What the Apostle Paul was inspired to declare to us here is that the normal means of men, women, and children coming to faith in Jesus is through the preaching of God’s Word – God’s Good News! And as Paul simply and rhetorically asks here, “how are they to hear and thus believe without someone preaching – without someone being sent by God to preach? And this call of God for men to proclaim His Word is nothing new or limited to the New Testament. We see time and time again in Old Testament times the Lord calling and sending out His prophets, priests, messengers, and watchman. In Isaiah 62:6–7 God reveals: On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth. The call of Ezekiel 3:16–17 reveals: And at the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.

What we are doing this evening is in perfect continuity with the Word of God stretching back to the call of Abraham, to call of Moses, to the call of Isaiah and Ezekiel, to our Lord Jesus’ call of the Apostles, and to the churches of Jesus Christ confirming God’s call upon men of every generation to be Good News messengers and God’s watchmen! And so, brothers and sisters, the church of Jesus Christ continues to need in every generation called men of God who will faithfully and fervently preach the pure Word of God – the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our Westminster Shorter Catechism, Question #89 goes right to the heart of this crucial truth:

Westminster Shorter Catechism, Question #89:

Q: How is the word made effectual to salvation?
A: The Spirit of God makes the reading, but especially the preaching, of the word, an effectual means of convicting and converting sinners, and of building them up in holiness and comfort, through faith, unto salvation.

And one of the other key Scriptural supports for this is found in 2 Timothy 3:14-17  “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it And how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

And so we see clearly from the Word of God that the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ must go forth into every tribe, nation, people, and language – and that the most common way for Jesus’ Good News to go forth is through the faithful proclamation or preaching of inspired Word of God by men who have been called by God, both inwardly, and outwardly through God’s people the church. Pastor James understands the central importance of serving King Jesus as a messenger of the Gospel and as a faithful watchman on the wall of God’s kingdom. And so this evening all of us have gathered to publicly acknowledge His call to this church for the purpose of evangelizing and planting a Chinese language local body of Christ – the Atlanta Covenant Church. And each and every one of us gathered here this evening for worship and for installation and who have been transformed by the proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ, can certainly agree with the Prophet Isaiah, when God speaks through him to say: “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voice; together they sing for joy;
for eye to eye they see the return of the Lord to Zion.”
